The Chamber of Shipping has welcomed European Union Maritime Day, which the European Commission has announced will be celebrated annually on 20th May.

The initiative, which is part of a ‘Blue Book Action Plan’, aims to raise public awareness of Europe’s maritime heritage and the importance of the maritime sector when considering the future of the wider environment.

Sea Vision UK, of which the Chamber of Shipping is a lead partner, is an on-going UK-wide campaign with the same objectives.

Sea Vision, which was launched in 2003, has brought together more than 370 organisations and associations from all aspects of UK maritime life. This example of good practice has proved to be very influential in Brussels and continues to provide a model for wider maritime cluster promotion throughout the continent.

The first European Maritime Day will be held this year and will help to highlight the web of relationships that link all marine and maritime related activities. The day is aimed to raise the profile of the maritime sector across Europe, providing a focal point and an opportunity to launch conferences, networking events and other activities.

Mark Brownrigg, Director-General of the UK Chamber of Shipping, said: “European Maritime Day is part of the ongoing process of raising the profile of the sector in people’s consciousness. The Chamber has been integral in developing best practice through Sea Vision UK and will continue to highlight the importance and success of the UK maritime sector in the future. We welcome this initiative, which recognises the significance of all things maritime across Europe.”
