The Senior Citizens Party (www.seniorcitizensparty.org.uk) which represents the largest demographic group in the UK, 20.6 million people age 50 or over who make up 43% of the voting population, warmly congratulates the Irish people and Libertas on successfully defending democracy in the EU. Grahame Leon-Smith, Party Leader said: "We are not anti-Europe but we must not stand by and ignore the fact that more and more power is being taken away from the people of Europe and given to unelected bureaucrats in Brussels (60 areas of decision making in all). The European Commission is power-mad, has no democratic accountability, and it is about time that it started seeing Europe through the eyes of the voters and listening to what they have to say. The real blame, however, lies with the Governments of the 26 member states, especially the UK, which many English people like to think of as "the mother of democracy", who allowed their citizens to vote on the original European Constitution but when they voted no, hypocritically agreed to rename it as a treaty and then tried to impose it on their citizens without consulting them. We have the Irish to thank for preventing them from getting away with it. There is no doubt in our mind that many states would have voted now if they had been allowed to do so. We believe in "Cooperation with, but not Control by Brussels", and that democracy must, and always will, triumph in the end !"
