On the day that the government launches its new carers’ strategy, carers of people with mental illness will be taking the rare opportunity to enjoy some time out at a deckchair tea party in front of the Houses of Parliament.

The carers want to highlight the need for better government investment in respite breaks so that carers can have some time away from their caring responsibilities.

Carers will be available for interview.

Key facts

· One third of mental health carers are only able to take very short breaks of less than two days

· Caring without a respite break is likely to take its toll on carers’ physical and mental health

· Unpaid carers save the government £87 billion each year

· Carer’s Allowance, the weekly benefit awarded to carers, is only £50.55
