Action for Prisoners’ Families: Comment on Corston Review
Tuesday, 13 Mar 2007 16:48
Welcoming the report by Baroness Corston on vulnerable women in the criminal justice system, Lucy Gampell director of Action for Prisoners’ Families said:
“The Corston Report rightly acknowledges the devastating effect that imprisonment has on the children of women offenders. Only 5 per cent of children stay in the family home when their mother is sent to prison. These children have their lives turned upside down and face significant mental health problems and failure at school. Sending mothers to prison causes irreparable damage to children and it is a decision that should not be taken lightly. We welcome the recommendations to increase the use of alternatives to custody for women and believe that prison should only be used as a last resort.”
