Pension Protection Fund: PPF 7800 index update

We have updated the PPF 7800 Index page to show the state of defined benefit pension scheme funding as at the end of June. The updated index can be viewed by following this link:

Highlights from this update include:

  • The aggregate funding position (total assets minus total liabilities) of almost 7,800 DB funds is estimated to have worsened over the month to a surplus of £8.3 billion at end-June 2008, from a surplus of £53.4 billion at end-May 2008 (Chart 1 and Table 1). Scheme funding is worse than it was a year previously (surplus of £130.4 billion in June 2007).
  • The total deficit of schemes in deficit in June 2008 is estimated to have worsened to £63.1 billion from £45.7 billion at the end of May 2008 (Chart 3 and Chart 4). In June 2007, the aggregate deficit of all schemes in deficit stood at £22.3 billion.
  • In June 2008, the total surpluses of schemes in surplus fell to £71.4 billion from £99.0 billion at the end of May 2008 (Chart 6). In June 2007, the aggregate surplus of all schemes in surplus stood at £152.7 billion.
