Almost 20 Young Shots from the South East region put their conservation skills to work at a special BASC event held on an Oxfordshire shoot last week.

The event, organised with BASC member Mick Ganly, offered the Young Shots the opportunity to learn about and take part in conservation activities on the shoot such as clearing rides in one of the drives and practicing their air rifle skills at targets for pest control.

The Young Shots were also able to access the river where they did some pond dipping, finding out about the different invertebrate you can expect to find in the river and their significance. The highlight of the day was the setting and collecting of six Crayfish traps along the river, from which 47 American Signal Crayfish were collected, and subsequently cooked and enjoyed by the Young Shots at the end of the day.

BASC regional officer, Jenni Thompson, said: “This day offered Young Shots a fantastic opportunity to discover the countryside around them; they had a great knowledge and enthusiasm to learn and really impressed our members who, at the end of the day, felt assured that the future of our sport was in safe hands.”
