Pension Protection Fund: PPF 7800 Index updated

We have updated the PPF 7800 Index page to show the state of defined benefit pension scheme funding as at the end of May. The updated index can be viewed by following this link:

Highlights this month include
The aggregate funding position (total assets minus total liabilities) of almost 7,800 DB funds is estimated to have improved for the second consecutive month to a surplus of £53.4 billion at end-May 2008, from a surplus of £30.3 billion at end-April 2008 (Chart 1 and Table 1). However, scheme funding is worse than it was a year previously (surplus of £126.1 billion in May 2007).
The total deficit of schemes in deficit in May 2008 is estimated to have improved to £45.7 billion from £55.5 billion at the end of April 2008 (Chart 3). In May 2007, the aggregate deficit of all schemes in deficit stood at £23.8 billion.
In May 2008, the total surpluses of schemes in surplus increased to £99.0 billion from £85.9 billion at the end of April 2008 (Chart 6). In May 2007, the aggregate surplus of all schemes in surplus stood at £149.9 billion.

The Pension Protection Fund has published a new document as part of its "Protecting People's Pensions" suite of consumer publications.
Introducing the Pension Protection Fund provides an overview of the PPF, and should be read in conjunction with the other leaflets in the series, which give more detailed information on matters such as the assessment period and compensation levels.
