We have updated the PPF 7800 Index page to show the state of defined benefit pension scheme funding as at the end of August. The updated index can be viewed by following this link:

Highlights from this update include:

  • The aggregate funding position (total assets minus total liabilities) of almost 7,800 DB funds is estimated to have worsened over the month to a deficit of £36.7 billion at end-August 2008, from a deficit of £24.1 billion at end-July 2008 (Chart 1 and Table 1). Scheme funding is worse than it was a year previously (there was a surplus of £59.1billion in August 2007).

  • The total deficit of schemes in deficit in August 2008 is estimated to have worsened to £91.6 billion from £80.1 billion at the end of July 2008 (Chart 3 and Chart 4). In August 2007, the aggregate deficit of all schemes in deficit stood at £43.0 billion.

  • In August 2008, the total surpluses of schemes in surplus fell to £54.9 billion from £56.0 billion at the end of July 2008 (Chart 6). In August 2007, the total surplus of all schemes in surplus stood at £102.0 billion.
