Double success for the Frangible Post System from 3M

3M, one of the biggest names in road safety, is delighted to announce that the 3M Frangible Post System 140 has achieved the NE2 classification in a double post crash test. Currently it is the only post of its size to have achieved this and the only approved solution for a specifier who needs to mount a sign on two passively safe posts but lacks the width or space to keep them 1.5 metres apart.
Tried and tested
Passive safety standards recommendations in the UK state that the space between passively safe sign posts should not be less than 1.5 metres, unless closer spacing is tested and approved. This recommendation means that it is unlikely that a car would hit both signs at the same time in the event of a crash.
Independent crash testing by TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) assessed the Frangible Post System against the parameters described in EN12767. The tests were carried out at 100kph with two 3M posts spaced 750mm apart. The results showed that the impact of this crash would not have injured a driver. The test illustrated the incredibly innovative nature of the glass and carbon fibre signpost, leading to its NE2 classification. To date no other post has demonstrated its safety level in this way.
“The new Frangible Post System from 3M is set to have a really positive impact on road safety and implications for the future design of roads,” said Liz Newell-Hart, Technical and Regulatory Manager, at 3M. “A single post crash achieved NE3 classification at 100kph, which is the best passive safety performance recorded to date. The results of this latest crash test are testament to its innovative design.”
Developed by 3M, the new Frangible Post System was unveiled at Traffex in April 2007, heralding a new era in passive safety for the signing industry and providing an innovative solution that fits neatly with the Highways Agency’s commitment to creating a more forgiving and safer roadside.
