The Senior Citizens Party ( www.seniorcitizensparty.org.uk )congratulates the House of Lords who voted by 309 -118 against plans to extend the time terror suspects can be held without charge to 42 days and calls upon the Government and both Opposition Parties to accept the infinitely simpler solution of repealing the archaic law which prohibits the police from questioning a suspect after he has been charged. Other countries do not tie the hands of their police in this way and it is only common sense that whenever new evidence is discovered the police should be able to confront the suspect with this in order to further the investigation, and perhaps arrest other people who may also have been involved in the crime. Where terrorism or organised crime is involved suspects can be charged with less serious offences which can be amended later as more evidence is acquired. Once charged any suspect can be perfectly legally be kept in prison until his trial without violating his human rights.
