Royal College of Physicians comment on DH health inequalities report

Monday, 09 Jun 2008 12:35
Professor Ian Gilmore, President of the Royal College of Physicians, welcomed today's DH Progress report on Health Inequalities:

"We are pleased that the Secretary of State for Health is making health inequalities one of his top priorities within healthcare. We particularly welcome the extra support that will become available for Spearhead areas to take local action on tobacco, obesity and alcohol issues, and hope that the funding for this will be in excess of that already available.

However, much of health inequality must be tackled in parallel by national policy measures, for example, by reducing the availability and increasing the price of alcohol, encouraging new forms of medicinal nicotine to help those who find it difficult to give up smoking, and counteracting the conflicting commercial interests that so often undermine public health initiatives."

Ian is in London today but has a couple of important meetings, so availability not good, but let me know if you need a very quick chat.
