According to the latest World Health Organisation figures, an estimated 68,000 women die every year as a result of unsafe 'backstreet' abortions, with thousands more suffering permanent disability.

This is an intolerable situation for any civilised society. An unwanted pregnancy is almost always a cause for extreme stress but when denied access to a safe termination, many women resort to unthinkable practices rather than proceed with a pregnancy."
