Arable farmers throughout England and Wales are being urged to take part in the NFU’s annual harvest survey to help produce as clear a picture as possible of this year’s harvest.
The survey, of cereals and oilseeds, has consistently provided the most accurate early forecast for UK crop yields and production levels and allows the NFU to provide members with an informed picture of the supply situation.
Ian Backhouse, chairman of the NFU’s combinable crops board, said it was important as many members as possible took part in the survey to ensure the most comprehensive results.
He said: “Without the information provided by growers, it is simply not possible to generate the accurate estimates that have been achieved in recent years. The results of this survey are especially important this year as prices are more volatile than for decades, and some groups have already forecast incredibly large harvests coming into the market.
“This year's wheat crop is widely assumed to be larger, with more area planted, and 2008's yield is the subject of a great deal of speculation. Last year the UK averaged 7.2 tonnes per hectare for wheat, but some trade estimates for the crop this year are significantly higher. The problems caused by this summer’s wet weather mean we need as much information as possible on what is really likely to be produced this year.
“Planting decisions are still being finalised for next year, and arable farmers will need certainty in the market before committing wholesale to premium crops like milling wheat. Producers will be looking for attractive forward contracts before planting milling varieties and managing them for premium specification.”
The harvest survey is available online at www.nfuonline.com and can also be provided in a paper form by the NFU. The aim is to give people who respond online, and provide an email address, a regional breakdown to allow them to compare results with the rest of their region.
All members who complete the survey will be entered into a prize draw which will see one member from each of the seven English regions and one from Wales receive a case of the NFU centenary ale Farmers Harvest. Survey responses should be submitted by September 22.
