The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) has been helping Defra gather vital information on the likely impact of the latest outbreak of avian flu will have on gamekeeping in the 3km and 10km zones.

Defra sought assistance from BASC’s Gamekeeping and Game Shooting department to build up a detailed picture of the scale of game rearing currently affected by the restrictions.

BASC has also written to all clubs and syndicates in the affected zones and is urging them and all other members to ensure they are compliant with all restrictions by checking the BASC website which has the most up to date information about avian flu and the implications for shooting.

Currently there are restrictions on the movement of eggs, chicks and birds and a total ban on the release of game in the 3km and 10km zones.

Gamekeeping and game shooting officer, Tom Blades, said: “Defra has called on BASC’s expertise and regional structure to help them assess the wider implications of restrictions brought in to prevent the spread of avian flu. We will continue to work with Defra to secure, where possible, the easing of restrictions.”
