Lords' migration report should "silence the peddlars of fear"

Welcoming the report from the House of Lords' Committee on the economic impact of immigration (published Tuesday, April 1st, 2008), Jack Dromey, deputy general secretary of Unite, the UK's biggest union said:

"This 84-page report should silence once and for all the peddlars of fear and xenophobia. Through their extensive analysis, the Lords Select Committee point to the benefits of migration but also address the importance of managing the consequences.

"Our members' experience is clear - rogue employers are exploiting newly-arrived migrants, undercutting workers who have been here for generations.

"We strongly support, therefore, the call for the robust enforcement of the laws protecting all workers, including the minimum wage.

“And the time has now come to extend the law to guarantee equal treatment of agency workers and the directly-employed, ending division at work."

Mr Dromey gave evidence to the Committee on behalf of Unite in November 2007.

Demand equal rights for agency workers

British employment law fails to protect the country's 1.4 million agency workers. The Temporary and Agency Workers bill would outlaw discrimination against agency workers and is backed by Unite, other unions and the TUC. On 22nd February, 157 MPs backed the bill, a momentous vote to end undercutting and abuse. But with government yet to back the bill, the fight for workplace justice has not yet been won. Keep pledging your support. Find out more on how you can get involved in the campaign.
