Boarding Schools Association: £10 million for state boarding schools
Friday, 12, Sep 2008 12:00
Lord Adonis today announced £10 million of new funding for state boarding schools to enable them to offer more places to vulnerable children.
BSA and SBSA were delighted to hear of this new funding. State boarding schools enjoyed a funding boost some three years ago, and the results are just becoming tangible. There have been big developments at Wymondham College in Norfolk, Old Swinford Hospital in Dudley, Brymore School in Somerset and Lancaster Royal Grammar School, all of which are seeing new boarding facilities coming on stream this year.
More recently, targeted capital funding grants have been made to Dallam in Cumbria, De Aston in Hertfordshire and Ashby School in Leicestershire.
But the new cash boost signals that the government is serious about promoting the power of boarding to help children from difficult circumstances to a better life. Among other benefits, it offers continuity of education in a life which may be disrupted in other ways. Professional 24/7 care, with lots of activities and great facilities, makes boarding a significant option in the menu of possibilities for children whose home lives may compromise their normal development.
