The British Cement Association is delighted to announce that one of its members, Lafarge Cement UK, has won a prestigious Business in the Community (BITC) Award for Excellence, beating off stiff competition in the process.
The Eco-Efficiency Award recognises companies that are taking a ‘strategic, comprehensive and innovative approach to reducing waste and natural resource use’. Other blue chip companies shortlisted in this category included Ford, Toyota and Boots the Chemists.
Former US Vice President, and environmental campaigner, Al Gore presented the award to Lafarge Cement UK’s Managing Director, Erdogan Pekenc, and National Environment Manager, Danny Lawrence. He commended all Lafarge Cement staff for their commitment to environmental performance, singling out the company’s achievement of reducing process waste by 80 per cent and increasing positive use of waste materials in the form of fuels, raw materials and product additions.
In addition, Lafarge’s joint-venture with ScottishPower, ScotAsh, competed against Redrow and Accenture to win the TATA Consultancy Services Marketplace Innovation category. Lafarge’s marketing director Charles Law collected the award from HRH The Prince of Wales.
BCA Chief Executive, Mike Gilbert commented, ‘this is a great accolade which underlines Lafarge’s, and the rest of the cement industry’s, commitment to sustainable development. Together the industry is playing its part in reducing CO2 emissions, saving energy, reducing waste and the reducing the use of virgin raw materials’.
The British Cement Association (BCA) is the trade and research organisation that represents the interests of the United Kingdom’s cement industry in its relations with Her Majesty’s Government, the European Union and relevant organisations in the United Kingdom. The members of the BCA (Buxton Lime Industries, Castle Cement, Cemex Cement UK and Lafarge Cement UK) are the major domestic manufacturers of Portland cement producing over 90% of the cement sold in the UK.
The cement industry has an annual turnover of £775 million and is a major supplier to the construction industry. It employs around 3,400 people directly with a further 15,000 jobs depending upon its operations.
