The Senior Citizens Party wishes to congratulate all the members of the British Olympic Team who gained such fantastic results in Beijing, 19 Gold Medals, 13 Silver and 15 Bronze and achieving a total of 47 points giving us fourth place after the USA, China and Russia. The Government has, quite rightly, spent a great deal of money on the training of our best sportsmen and sportswomen, but it spends nothing on encouraging Seniors to participate in sport, despite all the medical evidence showing that Seniors who engage in sport live longer and have fewer health problems, thus saving the NHS millions of pounds. We therefore call upon the Government to make all sports facilities available to Seniors at a nominal charge during the hours of 9.00am to 5.00pm when people who are in fulltime employment cannot use them. We also call upon the International Olympic Committee and all the National Committees to support “Sport for Seniors” and to organise a “Senior Olympics” along the lines of the highly successful “Paraplegic Olympics”.
