BASC has welcomed the development of a new qualification by City & Guilds NPTC which will provide a new way for people to find out more about live quarry shooting.
The Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Live Quarry Shooting is aimed at people who need an understanding of shooting as part of their job; wish to take it up as a recreation or are seeking a career in game management or conservation.
It is designed to ensure that people have a basic understanding of shooting and its related activities as a countryside sport. It covers law, all types of shotgun shooting from game shooting to wildfowling, shoot management including conservation work and the care and maintenance of shotguns to ensure safe and efficient operation.
City & Guilds NPTC centres have already shown a favourable response to the newly developed Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Live Quarry Shooting, indicating that it will link well with their current portfolios of qualifications.
BASC’s director of shooting standards, Peter Marshall, said: “We have set the standards and provided a defined entry point into the sport. This will encourage more people to take up shooting and ensure that they do so in a safe and informed manner.”
Robert Cottam, who is the chair of the Sector Skills Council - Lantra’s game and wildlife industry group, said: “This has been a joint effort with representatives from all the major organisations involved with shooting sports in the UK and demonstrates what can be achieved if they work together.”
