Statement from Action for Prisoners' Families on POA claims that life inside is too soft
Friday, 25 Apr 2008 15:49
Commenting on the POA statement on "cushy or comfy" jails, Lucy Gampell, Director of Action for Prisoners' Families said:
Prison is not an easy option. Prisoners spend most of the day locked up in their cells struggling to cope with prison life. Those given a custodial sentence loose their freedom, including vital precious contact with families and children. Visiting prison is extremely difficult with many families facing more than a 5 hour round trip. The only way in many cases of keeping in touch is by phone which, contrary to the POA comment claiming prisoners have free phone calls, costs significantly more than a BT phone box .
Such statements by the POA are irresponsible and cause great distress not just to prisoners who are finding it difficult to cope in custody, but to their children and families.
