BASC helps city children experience countryside life

Friday, 27 Jun 2008 10:54
Over four thousand city school children from Yorkshire got to experience rural life at a special event held at the Ledston estate near Castleford.

The Countryside Live event is a country fair for school children organised by the Countryside Foundation for Education (CFE) and supported by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC). The event is linked into the National Curriculum, covering areas such as new life and growth, people and places, caring and products.

Susan Bull from BASC’s shooting standards department hosted a stand with presentations by Alan Booth from BASC and Dave Mills from the Airgun Training and Education Organisation on the dangers of airguns and BB guns and the legal uses of guns.

BASC’s training officer, Jane Matthews, said: “This event is a wonderful opportunity to introduce city children to aspects of the countryside pursuits they may otherwise never be aware of. We also showed them how shooting provides us with great food and all the children and their teachers got to sample a venison burger which went down very well!”
