Affinities: Response to Queen's Speech

Monday, 12 Nov 2007 08:59
Following the Queen's Speech, the frequently repeated mantra by the Government is, "Our starting point is - and always will be - the concerns, the struggles and the hopes and ambitions of families in every part of our country".

At the Government information web site www.direct.gov.uk where they advertise "Public services all in one place" searches return the following results for topics with negative connotations:

Divorce 52
Domestic violence 34
Family breakdown 18
Relationship breakdown 12
Sexually transmitted 15
Teenage pregnancy 8
Cohabitation 7
Truancy 18
Antisocial behaviour 15

For positive topics - more likely to be associated with preventative measures - the search results are these:

Marriage preparation 0
Marriage support 0
Couple support 0
Relationship support 1
Family cohesion 0
Domestic cohesion 0
Social cohesion 0
Social wellbeing 0
Social capital 0

If the wellbeing of families really is the starting point of government policy, why is there so little emphasis in the Queen's speech on government policies and voluntary sector programmes that might improve it?
