EU Reform Treaty will safeguard children's rights
The EU Reform Treaty, signed by the British government today, will bring greater protection for children and should make it easier for countries to co-operate on the exchange of information about sex offenders, says the NSPCC.
This is the first time children’s rights have been enshrined in an EU treaty and is a ‘significant step forward’ for child protection everywhere.
NSPCC director and chief executive, Dame Mary Marsh said:” The treaty is a basis for effective measures to be introduced which means the best interests of the child are taken into account in all relevant policy areas. It also provides useful assets for the work of the NSPCC and should help ensure member states standardise the way sex offender information is passed between countries in order to protect children.
“We welcome the signing of the treaty today and are calling for a speedy ratification process in all EU Member States.”
