NFU: Shoppers can enjoy a taste of Chelsea at home thanks to British growers

Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:30
Visitors to the NFU’s stand at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show will be able to enjoy a taste of the show at home – because they will be able to buy everything used in the display at their local store or market.

The NFU will be hoping to mark its centenary year by winning its 12th consecutive gold medal and the display on this year’s stand, which is sponsored by NFU Mutual, will have a dynamic, 21st century, high-tech feel while showcasing the very best of British fruit, vegetables, plants and flowers which can all be bought in people’s local supermarkets, markets or stores.

Display designer Penny Riley said: “This display is a special one for the centenary. We looked back at what we did for 75 years and this is very different – with that display we looked at the past whereas this is quite a futuristic display.

“The display is called ‘NFU: Growing For Another Century’ to link in with the NFU’s centenary celebrations. It’s designed to reflect the journey produce takes from its source to the shops. The produce on display will cover the length and breadth of the country – from Suffolk to Worcestershire to the Isle of Wight.”

Richard Hirst, chairman of the NFU Horticulture Board, said: “The Chelsea Flower Show is a great way to showcase the diversity of British produce and this year’s display promises to be spectacular. Visitors are always surprised to learn that everything on display is grown in this country so it serves as a reminder of the quality and range of home-grown produce and a prompt for people to ‘think British’ when shopping.”
