Bus and Coach Operators in Wales are invited to attend a free information briefing on the introduction of the PCV Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC)1 – hosted by GoSkills, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for Passenger Transport at the Park Plaza Hotel, Greyfriars Road, Cardiff on 19 March.

John Smith, GoSkills’ PCV Driver Training Adviser, said: “This information briefing for bus and coach operators in Wales is the latest in a series of GoSkills’ industry events being run ahead of the CPC implementation date later this year. The briefing will follow the launch of Routes to Progress - GoSkills’ Sector Skills Agreement2 for Wales - which is also being held at the Park Plaza Hotel.”

The benefits of the PCV Driver CPC will be improvements in the overall quality of employees available to the bus and coach industries, an increase in road safety as well as the promotion of a more professional image, attracting more people to drive buses and coaches for a living.

Notes to Editors:

1. The EU Directive that introduces the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) comes into force across all European Union member states on 10 September 2008 for bus and coach drivers. In future, just holding a vocational driving licence will not be sufficient for someone who wishes to drive such vehicles for a living. Employers will have a responsibility to ensure all the drivers they employ hold the correct certificate and licence.

2. ‘Routes to Progress’ is the name of GoSkills’ Sector Skills Agreement for the Passenger Transport Sector in Wales. It is an agreement between industry, training providers, awarding bodies and other stakeholders to tackle skills issues in a coordinated way. It is driven by employers’ needs and aspirations in relation to the skills of their workforce and sets out a plan of actions. The full list of sector priorities can be viewed by going to the GoSkills website: www.goskills.org and accessing the Serving the Sector section.
