ETA: Britain's most expensive bicycle - sold with its own security guard

Wednesday, 04 Jun 2008 13:08
A bicycle has gone on sale today that is so expensive it can’t be insured, so it is being sold with the ultimate optional extra – its own security guard.

The £9,500 custom-made, 24ct gold-framed machine has been commissioned by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), a bicycle insurance provider. But unable to insure bicycles worth more than £4,000, the ETA is offering as an optional extra a security guard who will stand guard over the gold bike when it is left in public.

With less than 10 days before the start of National Bike Week, it is believed the bike will be bought by a ‘cyclist who has everything’.

Director at the ETA, Andrew Davis said: “A personal security guard is not a practical option for most people, but with over half a million bicycles stolen across Britain each year, it’s vital that cyclists are properly insured.”

Celebrity cyclists who could afford the gold bike include:

  • Madonna
  • David Beckham
  • Paul McCartney
  • Paul Smith
  • Boris Johnson
  • Fatboy Slim

    Notes to editors

    Green Transport Week take place between 14 – 22 June 2008 www.eta.co.uk/green_transport_week

The gold bike started life as a Charge Plug – a ‘fixed-wheel’ design of the type made popular by London cycle couriers

Over 98 per cent of cyclists may be putting themselves at financial risk because they do not have specialist insurance that offers third party cover - most cyclists seem unaware that if they are involved in an accident that causes damage, they can find themselves facing a claim for compensation. Cycle insurance from the ETA includes third party indemnity, cover for theft, accidental damage and vandalism, legal aid, personal accident cover and a breakdown recovery service for cyclists.

Cycling in London has risen 83% since 2000 - almost half-a-million journeys are made by bike in London every day. (source: TfL)

Cyclists who request a quote for cycle insurance from www.ilovemybike.co.uk have the chance to win a 24ct gold-plated bicycle – the prize does not include the security guard!

The Environmental Transport Association is a not-for-profit ethical breakdown organisation, providing carbon-neutral breakdown cover and insurance products. As well as encouraging responsible driving to reduce carbon, the ETA campaigns for sustainable transport www.eta.co.uk
