Employment Opportunities: Govt should focus on people with disabilities to halve child poverty

In response to the new measures announced by Government to eradicate child poverty, the national
charity, Employment Opportunities for People with Disabilities is calling for greater focus on supporting people with disabilities back into employment.
Karin Pappenheim, Chief Executive at Employment Opportunities says
“Whilst we welcome the target of eradicating child poverty by 2020, with one in four children living in poverty having at least one disabled parent, and half of children in workless families either having a disabled parent or are under 5 and have a lone parent, the government must not forget the millions of people with disabilities and medical conditions who are unable to work.
“We've been proving for nearly 30 years that, with the right support, people with medical conditions can make the move back into work. One in six incapacity benefit claimants have childcare responsibilities, and solutions need to include provision of affordable quality childcare with employment support and a positive approach to disability among employers. Employment is a key gateway to economic and social inclusion and individual well-being; the best route out of poverty “
