A Cheshire game shoot has won 150 pheasant poults through a prize draw run by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).

Every shoot that made a donation to BASC during the 2007/08 season were entered into the draw to win the poults for delivery this summer.

The High Legh shoot near Warrington was drawn out of the hat to win the poults, which were generously donated by Paul Griffiths of Higher Kempley Farm, Calverhall, near Whitchurch, Shropshire.

Paul, who rears 15,000 pheasant poults and a few thousand partridges a year by traditional methods on his pig farm, said: “I’ve been a member of BASC since my father bought me a membership sometime in the 1960s and I’ve remained a member ever since so I wanted to give something back to BASC. We started rearing poults just for our own shoot and have expanded over the years to supply other shoots. We rear the birds on grass because I believe in maintaining high standards and adhering to the Code of Good Shooting Practice.”

BASC’s head of fundraising and sponsorship, Nick Glazebrook, said “BASC would like to pay particular thanks to Paul Griffiths for generously donating these poults to help encourage other shoots to support our vital work to promote and protect the future of shooting. We have had an excellent response from many shoots who have given generously through donating part of their sweep stakes on shoot days and for which we are most grateful. We hope that all our shoots have an excellent season in 2009 and that the High Legh Shoot enjoys the benefit of these excellent traditionally reared pheasants.”
