A member of the public who was injured when he tackled an armed robber during a cash-in-transit attack has received a Special Award from the British Security Industry Association in recognition of an act of outstanding service and courage.
The award was given to Adam Mapleson for his actions at Rayleigh Railway Station in May 2007 when he witnessed an armed man threatening a female cash-in-transit courier with a gun and robbing her of the cash box she was carrying. Adam confronted the male and after a scuffle, the assailant shot Adam in the chest, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. He underwent major surgery, requiring a 16-pint blood transfusion. Adam has since made a full recovery.
BSIA Chief Executive, David Dickinson, comments: "Adam's bravery when faced with an armed robber is an inspiration to us all. It is testament to his heroism that he has said that faced with the same situation he would do the same again. I would also like to pay tribute to Detective Superintendent Mick Field and DI Ian Trantum from British Transport Police and their team for their hard work on this case."
The BSIA's Special Awards for Outstanding Service are sponsored by the Security Industry Authority. The award was presented at the BSIA's Annual Luncheon, held on 16th July at the London Hilton, Park Lane.
