Breast Cancer Care comment on the UK launch of Tyverb

Commenting on the UK launch of Tyverb as a treatment for secondary (metastatic) breast cancer, Antonia Dean, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Breast Cancer Care, said:

“Any development that could improve our ability to control secondary (metastatic) breast cancer is welcome.

“We speak to people with secondary breast cancer daily on our helpline, and know how they are especially interested in new treatments that could help slow down the progression of the disease.

“This announcement means there is now another treatment option, however it is important to note that it is only effective in those with Her2 positive secondary breast cancer, and we know that 20 to 25 per cent of all breast cancers are Her2 positive.

“As the treatment is licensed for use in the UK we hope to see an appraisal by NICE and SMC follow shortly, enabling rapid and equal access to the drug for everyone who could benefit from it.”

Secondary breast cancer (also known as metastatic or advanced breast cancer) occurs when breast cancer cells spread from the first (primary) tumour in the breast through the lymphatic or blood system to other parts of the body. The most common parts of the body that breast cancer spreads to are the bones, the liver and the lungs. A diagnosis of secondary breast cancer means that the cancer cannot be cured, although it can be controlled, sometimes for years.
