Buckingham Palace guards had had the unusual experience of tourists turning away last Saturday as the annual KillSpills London ride passed by, just as they were changing the guard!
“The tourists all turned towards us. It was just a sea of faces. Everyone was waving, clapping and cheering and when we stopped on Constitution Hill next to Buckingham Palace, tourists were posing by the bikes for photos – it was amazing” said KillSpills Team Leader and Founder, Stephen Edwards.
The KillSpills campaign was founded in 2003 to counter the menace of diesel spillage and particularly, the danger it presents to motorcyclists. The annual London Ride serves to publicise the campaign, but to celebrate KillSpills fifth anniversary, this year’s ride was by invitation only and limited to 100 riders.
After delivering a progress report to Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street, Stephen Edwards said: “This year it was not a protest demonstration, it was a celebration of the achievements we have made and a thank you to our supporters, including the motorcyclists of the Metropolitan Police. This way we were also able to promote motorcyclists as caring and responsible road users, an aim close to the KillSpills team’s heart.”
At the end of the ride, BMF Chairman Anna Zee led riders to the BMF’s Tail End Show at Peterborough where riders completed a lap of honour in the main arena and presented an award to Anna Zee in recognition of the BMF’s support.
Note:
Sponsored by the BMF since 2004, the KillSpills campaign has now also received the backing of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. The KillSpills campaign has made significant progress over the past five years, most recently being responsible for revisions to the Highway Code highlighting the dangers of diesel spills. KillSpills has also obtained funding from the DfT for 200,000 anti diesel spill leaflets and saw the Highways Agency launch their own anti diesel spill message aimed at road hauliers. The KillSpills team is currently working on a DfT funded project on how best to clean up diesel spills with the aim of conducting tests in 2009 and issuing national guidelines by 2010.
