Action for Prisoners' Families welcomes Ofcom 's decision to tell the providers of phones in prisons to reduce their costs.

A ten minute call from prison costs the caller 7 times as much as it would if they were outside so prisoners are forced to keep their calls short.

'Phone calls are a life line for prisoners and their families many of whom are unable to visit family members serving sentences in prisons that are far away from their home bases. Speaking on the phone helps to maintain family ties but the high costs have seriously impeded this contact. We hope that the National Offender Management Service will lose no time in re-negotiating this contract.'
