PSAEW comment on extended use of tasers

Monday, 24 November 2008 12:00 AM

Senior officers today welcomed the latest roll-out of tasers and called for them to be available to ALL frontline officers.

Chief Superintendent Alan Horton, head of tactical operations in Kent and Chair of the Association's Uniformed and Operational Policing Business Area, said: 'Tasers are an incredibly useful tactical option for officers.

'The trials were successful and we have been waiting a considerable time for this secondary phase.

'Tasers have been shown to be safe both for people being restrained and officers using them and we are glad that the Home Office has provided this additional funding to equip and train more staff.

'It is important officers are fully protected when they are delivering services to our communities.

'We hope we can anticipate a further expansion of its use to all frontline officers in due course although we recognise this would be a very costly move and all forces are operating within serious budgetary constraints.'
