The Boarding Schools’ Association

Welcome

The Boarding Schools Association has over 500 member schools in Britain and overseas.
Full membership of the Association is open only to schools accredited by one of the school member associations of the Independent Schools Council or the State Boarding Schools Association. The Boarding Schools Association has Associate Membership of the Independent Schools’ Council.

The aims of the Association are

• To promote the qualities of boarding education
• To encourage the highest standards of welfare for boarding pupils in its member schools
• To provide information about boarding and boarding schools
• To organise a professional development programme for all governors and staff of boarding schools
• To produce appropriate publications on boarding issues and good practice
• To conduct and authorise appropriate research
• To work with other bodies concerned with boarding education
• To develop links with boarding associations and boarding schools world-wide
• To maintain a regular dialogue with appropriate Government Ministers and Inspection bodies

The Association organises five residential conferences a year, for Headteachers, Deputy Heads, Matrons and medical staff, Housemasters and Housemistresses, and for the staff of State Boarding Schools.

The most recent of these was the Headteachers’ Conference in York, April 29 – May 1 2008, at which Dr Martin Stephen announced his intention of taking St Paul’s School out of the league tables published by the national press in August.

The Conference was entitled, ‘Boarding: Education in the Round’, and Chairman Geoffrey Boult, Headmaster of Giggleswick School in Yorkshire, spoke movingly about the benefits of a boarding education, with time and expertise to develop the potential in every child, be they sportsman, artist, actress or musician, as well as nurturing achievement in the classroom.

National Director, Hilary Moriarty, has written on educational matters for more than 25 years.
