Survey into public attitudes to A-levels and GCSEs

Friday, 19 March 2010 12:00 AM

Commenting on the survey by Ofqual into the perception of school examinations, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union said;

"Despite the ill-informed abuse poured on GCSEs from those who should know better, it is quite clear that teachers, parents and students have confidence in the quality of these examinations. I do hope that critics of GCSEs take these important findings on board.

"I am concerned about the future for diplomas. Lack of public support from the opposition parties, and the Russell Group of universities, threatens to undermine their credibility. This is a matter of very real concern, particularly for students but also for parents and teachers who have invested so much in this qualification.

"Despite the fact that well over two thirds of teachers have confidence in the accuracy and quality of the marking of A-Level papers, the question mark from a significant minority on this issue is worrying. I would urge Ofqual to dig further into the reasons for these concerns".
