NUT: Vetting and barring scheme

Monday, 14 December 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting on the proposed changes to the Vetting and Barring Scheme Christine Blower General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teaching union said;

"The NUT welcomes the Government's acceptance of the 10 recommendations made by Sir Roger Singleton in his review of the new Vetting & Barring Scheme. This is a step forward in developing a robust but fair framework for child protection.

"We are particularly pleased that Ed Balls has today agreed to look again at plans to retain the unfair practice of disclosing unproven and untested information to employers. Many teachers' careers have been blighted by decisions made on the basis of misleading and inaccurate reports contained in Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosures.

"We are also pleased that the Government has recognized that it needs to make changes to the Scheme which would have had the unintended consequence of discouraging the involvement of authors and others who have so much to offer to school groups, as well as deterring parents from volunteering with school activities, which would damage pupils' access to school trips and exchanges".
