NUT comment on Head Teachers Union to Strike over pensions

Friday, 17 June 2011 2:20 PM

Commenting on the decision by the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) to ballot for strike action, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers union, said:

“Today’s announcement by Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander has made it crystal clear that there is no intention on the part of Government to continue the negotiations on pensions in a serious and open manner. It would appear they have already decided the changes they wish to make to public sector pensions regardless of the consequences or the facts.

“Given this position it is hardly surprising that some unions feel they have no other option than to ballot for strike action.

“While strike action is always regrettable, the NUT welcomes the unanimous decision by the NAHT executive to ballot for strike action. We will work closely with the NAHT, ATL and UCU to ask Government to reassess their position and undertake the revaluation of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme as promised.

“Teachers’ pensions are affordable and essential. To take away teachers’ pensions rights will see many leave the pension scheme and also the profession. This will be a disaster and it is one which can be avoided.”
