NHF: Rural campaign wins backing from MPs and councillors from across the country

Friday, 3 July 2009 12:00 AM

The parliamentary launch of the National Housing Federation's new rural housing campaign attracted MPs and councillors from across the country.

The event, which was held in the House of Commons last week, marked the official start of the Federation's Save our Villages campaign, which aims to boost the number of social homes being built in rural England to meet local demand.

The campaign has already been backed by 43 MPs from across the political spectrum. They have all signed an early day motion supporting the aims of the campaign.

A further 11 local authorities have also signed up in support.

Speaking after the event, which was attended by 22 MPs, the Federation's director, Ruth Davison, said: "It was fantastic to see so many MPs turn up to the event. It's obvious that a lack of affordable rural housing comes up time and time again in their constituency surgeries, so many were just as enthusiastic about our campaign as we are.

"One MP even dictated a letter to his local authority there and then asking them to back the campaign!"

"I'm optimistic we can go on from here and really make an impact where it matters, which is in villages and market towns all around the country."
