NASUWT: TUC Lobby: 'A wake up call to MPs'

Monday, 18 October 2010 12:00 AM

Members of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, from across the country will be arriving in Westminster on Tuesday 19 October to join with other unions in the TUC's All Together for Public Services rally and lobby of Parliament.

The TUC event is timed to send a strong message of deep concern to MPs about the savage cuts to public services expected in the Chancellor's announcement of the Comprehensive Spending Review on 20th October 2010.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, will be taking part in a photo call with other General Secretaries at 11am outside the Treasury before the rally begins in the Central Hall at 12.30pm.

Chris Keates said:

"Despite the relentless propaganda campaign by the Coalition Government to try to convince people that there is no alternative to deep, swift and savage cuts, there is a growing sense of anger and betrayal among public sector workers who have been singled out for these attacks.

"The Coalition Government claims it is committed to fairness. What is fair about public sector workers, who do some of the most difficult and demanding jobs, being asked to face job loss, pay freezes and attacks on their hard earned pensions whilst the greed and recklessness of the banks and financial institutions that caused the economic recession goes unchecked?

"We all depend on the police and fire services to keep us safe, on the NHS to keep us healthy, on schools to educate our children and on social care at times of greatest need.

"The TUC rally and lobby is a wake up call to MPs to urge them not to be complicit in dismantling these services which are the cornerstones of a decent society."
