NASUWT: Details of Pension Tax laid bare

Commenting on the publication of the consultation documents on increases to pension contributions of teachers and other public service workers in England and Wales, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“The formal consultation was expected and simply lays bare the potential scale of the proposed increases we have been predicting all along.

“It is grossly unjust that teachers and other public service workers, who are already facing an imposed pay freeze, increases in VAT and National Insurance and rises in cost of living and being faced with paying what is in effect an additional tax for a financial crisis they did not create.

“Teachers had already agreed to potential increases in contributions, should the cost valuation of their schemes require it for 2012/13, as part of the agreement reached with the last government in 2005/6.

“No valuation has been produced.

“The Coalition cannot just airbrush out this critical part of the process nor can they ignore that the 2005/06 changes have already produced £1bn in savings.

“The NASUWT will continue to press the unfairness and gross injustice of this attack on teachers and other public service workers and maintains its long standing commitment to industrial action to protect pensions if there is any attempt to impose change and a negotiated settlement cannot be achieved.”
