Responsible Dog Ownership

The Mayhew Animal Home is a founding member of BARK (Brent Action for Responsible K9's) a multi-agency group formed to combat irresponsible dog ownership.

The Mayhew Animal Welfare Officers (AWO's) work alongside Brent Council, the Metropolitan Police, RSPCA and Brent Housing Partnership to address community factors including irresponsible dog ownership, the misuse of dogs, anti-social behaviour and dog welfare cases.

The AWO's take part in active patrols in the local boroughs (also in H&F BARK), alongside the Metropolitan police, to visit properties and provide dog owners with the opportunity for free micro-chipping, low cost neutering (free for bull breeds) and give advice where necessary.

The Mayhew believes that responsible dog ownership is: .

  • Fully providing for all their needs including food, care, housing, veterinary care and a stimulating environment .

  • To neuter all dogs to prevent further over-population and thus contributing to the stray dog crisis.

  • To micro-chip all dogs to ensure owner accountability.
