Community Education
The Animal Welfare Officers at The Mayhew run educational programmes in schools, colleges and for professionals in the animal industry to provide information about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
In the current climate of concern over irresponsible dog ownership the AWO's educate younger children about how stay safe around dogs by reading basic behavioural signals, how to approach a dog safely in a park and finally what to do if faced with an aggressive dog. This is in addition to discussing what pets need to keep them happy and healthy.
With older students, they will discuss issues such as the overpopulation crisis of bull breeds and welfare topics including dog fighting and neutering. To aid this, the visits are done at The Mayhew or dogs are taken into schools, this gives students vital interaction with animals, which may dispel any unfounded fears or phobias.
Workshops and training programmes are also held for professionals in the animal industry to improve and maintain high standards of animal welfare. The workshops also aim to promote neutering, responsible pet re-homing and an increased awareness of animal welfare legislation.
