IET: 2011 Ambition Award Winners Revealed

10 November 2011, London: The Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) today announces the winners of its 2011 Ambition Awards, with Mitali Kakran, winning the global final of the Present Around The World competition.

The competition for students and young professionals was decided at a glittering awards ceremony held yesterday at the Intercontinental Hotel, Park Lane, London. Hosted by Bang Goes the Theory presenter and wild animal biologist Liz Bonnin, the ceremony was attended by the finest minds in engineering, both young and old, from all over the world. Each of the five Present Around The World competition contestants gave a ten minute presentation with the audience invited to vote for the best presenter.

Miss Kakran, 24, graduated from The Nanyang Technological University in Singapore majoring in Bioengineering. Presenting her paper on the infinite possibilities of the newly found material Graphene, Miss Kakran won the final against contestants drawn from all over the globe. She received a cash prize of £1,000, with the runner-up Muhammad Saad Ali from the South Asia region receiving £500.

Upon receiving the award, Miss Kakran commented, “It’s an honour to have the opportunity to present and be voted as the winner by such inspirational and esteemed professionals. It’s been a wonderful experience being part of this competition and I encourage young people around the world to get involved in some way, to help form the future of engineering.”

IET Awards and Prizes Manager, Linda Deleay said: “The IET Ambition Awards are recognition of the extraordinary skill that exists among young and prospective engineering professionals. My warmest congratulations go to all the winners and finalists who I’m sure will all have extremely bright futures in the engineering and technology sectors.”

“In addition to rewarding outstanding achievement and helping students with their finances, the IET’s Ambition Awards aim to encourage students to study engineering and ultimately to enter the engineering and technology professions. The IET is currently looking at ways to work with industry and government to expand on this programme.”

In addition to the Present Around The World final, a series of other awards and scholarships were presented at the ceremony. These included undergraduate scholarships and grants ranging in value from £1,000 for one year to £3,000 per annum, and postgraduate scholarships ranging in value from £2,500 to £10,000.
