BPAS (the British Pregnancy Advisory Service) has been a registered charity since 1968, and is the UK’s leading sexual and reproductive healthcare provider. As well as contraceptive advice and treatment, BPAS carried out around 60,000 terminations of pregnancy in 2007. 90% of our work is carried out on behalf of the NHS. Typical non-NHS funded clients may have travelled from Eire, Northern Ireland or Italy, locations where access to safe, legal abortion remains restricted by law. BPAS has centres across England, Wales and Scotland and is licensed by the Department of Health and inspected by the Care Quality Commission.
Apart from providing high quality services, BPAS is committed to education, research and the development of good practice. BPAS has also developed an important role in providing accurate, up-to-date information and informed comment on sexual health to Parliamentarians, policy makers, journalists, opinion formers and researchers.
