CIOB: Sir Ian Dixon Scholars present research results

Sir Ian Dixon Scholars, Benjamin Potts from Killby & Gayford and Edward Basterfield from Costain successfully presented the results from their research at a recent Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) event.

Benjamin Potts from Killby & Gayford investigated 'How to effectively implement an EMS & ISO 14001 standard in Medium Sized Building Contractors (specifically at site level)'. Benjamin produced a model explaining how to effectively implement an environmental management system on site.

Killby & Gayford Group Chief Executive, Chris Chivers, in supporting Benjamin's work said; "We are delighted to have had the opportunity to allow Ben to carry out this important research which has uncovered some startling facts on the approach by some parts of our industry to creating environmental awareness and promoting sustainable construction. The excellent results obtained by Ben will certainly be used in influencing our future business profile."

Costain's Edward Basterfield researched 'The Post Study Training and Development of Construction Graduates'. Edward's research results emphasised the importance of mentoring for graduates in construction companies.

Alex Vaughan, Managing Director, Community - Costain Group, commented; "Edward has underlined the qualities which the Costain Group demands in a fiercely competitive world. His extensive research identified key findings which will assist Costain and other companies to improve performance and his potential has been rightly recognised by both the Sir Ian Dixon Scholarship and his colleagues at Costain. Edward's extremely professional presentation was a fitting conclusion to a successful exercise."

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), in conjunction with the Worshipful Company of Constructors, has run the Sir Ian Dixon Scholarship since 1998 and they have covered a wide range of subjects. The scholarship, which is awarded annually, involves a twelve month study of a Construction Management topic which is of mutual interest to the individual's host company, the Worshipful Company of Constructors, the CIOB and the individuals themselves.

Dr Sarah Peace CIOB research manager said; "We are very proud of Benjamin and Edward. The research that they have carried out will be of great benefit to the industry and provides both scholars with a piece of work that will play a significant role in their future career in the industry."

The benefits of the Sir Ian Dixon Scholarship relates not only to the funding provided by the scholarship, but also the support and closer integration of the scholar with its employer and vice versa.
