CIOB: Sir Ian Dixon scholars investigate key industry topics

Thursday, 21 January 2010 12:00 AM

This years Sir Ian Dixon Scholars, Tom Baldwin ICIOB from Kingerlee and Steven Sanzone ICIOB from Laing O'Rourke presented the results from their research, which focused on two key industry topics, at The Royal College of Pathologists in London on Wednesday 20th January 2010.

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), in conjunction with the Worshipful Company of Constructors, has run the Sir Ian Dixon Scholarship since 1998.

Tom Baldwin from Kingerlee studied 'An Investigation into the Financial and Environmental Impact of Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) UK Construction Industry.' SWMPs are a legal requirement in England for all construction projects begun after 6th April 2008, worth over £300,000 and have had a major impact on the construction industry.

The conclusions of the research identify key areas of waste management that require attention/alteration, and offer recommendations for enhancing the entire process, in order to improve the value of a Site Waste Management Plan.

Laing O'Rourke's Steven Sanzone researched 'The impact of an organisation's culture upon Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) within the UK construction industry.' In 2008/09, an estimated 538000 people in Great Britain, who had worked in the last year, believed they were suffering from a musculoskeletal disorder that was caused or made worse by their current or past work.

The conclusions and findings identify that organisational culture can have an extremely positive impact on health and safety, particularly in helping to improve and change attitudes and behaviours.

Dr Sarah Peace, CIOB Scholarship and Research Manager commented, "Tom and Steven have identified excellent research findings which are of great benefit to the industry. Both presentations were extremely professional and the Chartered Institute of Building and the Worshipful Company of Constructors are very proud of what they have achieved."
