CIOB: Collaborative action will help industry prepare for a low carbon future

CITB-ConstructionSkills and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) are working together to help the construction industry prepare for – and win work from – the low carbon agenda. The collaboration comes as industry waits for greater clarity on the opportunities to be created by the launch of the Green Deal next year.

The organisations are taking action together so that CITB-ConstructionSkills’ Cut the Carbon campaign and the CIOB’s Carbon Action 2050 offer the greatest benefits for industry. Together, they are working to help the industry keep up to date with the low carbon construction news and policy, and to help businesses to make the most of the opportunities that are presented.

The CIOB created Carbon Action 2050 to inform industry on reducing carbon emissions through best practice and innovation. ConstructionSkills’ Cut the Carbon campaign focuses specifically on the knowledge and skills that small and medium sized businesses need to capitalise on low carbon building opportunities.

By working together, the organisations are facilitating the process for construction businesses to understand the broader agenda as well as the action they need to take to acquire skills and qualifications for low carbon work.

Mark Farrar, Chief Executive of CITB-ConstructionSkills, comments: “With the launch of the Green Deal now less than one year away, the time to prepare for the future is now. Collaboration is the only way to go in the drive for a more sustainable built environment.”

CITB-ConstructionSkills and the CIOB will work together on a number of projects including the promotion of awareness and understanding of the low carbon agenda, and the creation and dissemination of information on actions for businesses to take to prepare for a low carbon future.

Cut the Carbon:

The Cut the Carbon campaign was launched in October 2010 by a partnership between CITB-ConstructionSkills, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) and the National Specialist Contractors Council (NSCC) to help small and medium sized business (SMEs) prepare for the construction industry’s low carbon future through skills and knowledge. The Cut the Carbon portal – www.cskills.org/cutcarbon – offers information on the Green Deal as well as guidance and advice on winning low carbon work, details of training and qualifications, case studies and the latest information on policy and legislative changes.

Carbon Action 2050:

CarbonAction2050.com is an online action plan designed to inform those working and operating in the built environment on how to reduce carbon emissions. We are doing this as, worldwide, buildings use around 32% of the world’s resources in construction, and generate up to 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The CIOB is ideally placed to share local knowledge globally. Collectively, we are a diverse group of construction management professionals, uniquely placed to share knowledge and best practice between industry sectors, and across international borders.

The Green Deal:

The Green Deal is the government’s flagship energy saving policy, creating a framework for businesses to offer consumers energy efficiency improvements with no upfront costs. Through this structure, the Green Deal will aim to retrofit twenty six million buildings, with the aim to create two hundred and fifty thousand jobs. However, only firms that are trained and accredited will be able to carry out this work
