Most parents would pick Degree Apprenticeships over an Oxbridge education for their children.

This is the key finding of new research by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), which asked 1,000 parents of 16-21 year olds how they valued Degree Apprenticeships and Chartered Status compared to traditional degrees.

Parents strongly support Degree Apprenticeships, which were launched by the government in 2015, with 61% preferring to see their child take this route than a degree from Oxford or Cambridge university.

70% of parents say a Degree Apprenticeship is better value for money, and two thirds of parents would still prefer their child took this route even if money were no object.

This is driven by a belief that a Degree Apprenticeship would boost employment prospects. 81% of parents think it would give their children a better chance of getting a job than a standalone university degree, while 83% would consider a Degree Apprenticeship for themselves if they were 18 again.

However, while parents in the know have a positive impression of Degree Apprenticeships, only 13% have heard of them and higher education institutions need to do more to raise awareness.

Nearly half of parents feel that going to university is promoted ahead of apprenticeships, but 77% think they should be promoted equally.

Parents also feel that employers need to do more to support young people entering the workplace. 72% support the Government’s planned Apprenticeship Levy, while three quarters think employers should pay for the training and wages of apprentices. Large employers should have to take on apprentices by law say 70% of parents.

As part of its plan to create three million new apprentices by 2020 the Government has worked with employers to create the new range of Degree Apprenticeships, including the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship.
