Chamber of Shipping: Launch of two new information leaflets for seafarers

The National Maritime Occupational Health and Safety Committee (NMOHSC) - comprising the Chamber of Shipping and the maritime unions Nautilus UK and RMT - has published two new leaflets - Guidelines to Shipping Companies on Hepatitis and "Drugs - What You Should Know".

"Drugs - What You Should Know" is a revised and updated advice leaflet. Previous editions of the leaflet were issued by the Chamber of Shipping in 1992 and 1998, making this the first occasion on which the leaflet has been supported by both Nautilus UK and RMT.

The leaflet:

. sets out the UK's legal provisions concerning the production, supply and use of controlled drugs, as well as the offences under the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003.
. offers a useful summary of the effects of commonly-abused drugs, while making it clear that seafarers may be subject to testing for drugs under individual company policies.
. stresses the importance of seafarers informing the Master of their ship whenever they are taking legally-available medications, in case these have any side-effects that may affect the safety of the ship.

Guidelines to Shipping Companies on Hepatitis

Hepatitis is a highly prevalent infection, the World Hepatitis Alliance estimates that as many as one person in 12 worldwide may be infected with the blood-borne strains Hepatitis B or C, which are passed on in similar ways to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Hepatitis A, meanwhile, is a highly infectious disease that is particularly prevalent in areas of poor hygiene or bad sanitation, but can occur anywhere if proper hygiene procedures are not followed.

Hence it is important that seafarers are aware of the means of transmission of the various strains and of the measures that need to be taken to avoid infection.
