BMF: No To Bike Parking Tax M25 Protest Run
Friday, 24 September 2010 12:00 AM
The British Motorcyclists Federation is calling on its 80,000 members to support tomorrow's 'M25 - Great Lap of London - The Other Way Round' protest run in support of the No To Bike Parking Tax campaign (NTBPT).
A strong supporter of the NTBPT campaign to overturn the parking charges imposed on motorcyclists by Westminster City Council, the bmf say that a physical and visible protest is the best way of exposing these unwarranted charges and bringing the issue to a wider audience.
Although all riders are free to join the protest, it is also hoped that at least 2000 riders will donate £10 each to the legal challenge fund, a fund designed to raise enough money for an appeal against the High Court judgment that ruled that the parking charges were legal. (Donations will be returned to donors should permission to appeal NOT be obtained or if preferred, donated to the Air Ambulance Service).
The bmf's Government Relations Executive Chris Hodder, said: "Although this is a protest run on the M25, this is not just a London issue. The High Court ruling that Westminster's parking charges for motorcycles are legal could well signal the end of the customary free parking enjoyed by motorcyclists across the UK. That's why this run is important to all our members and indeed all motorcyclists."
M25 run details: Leaving South Mimms Services (nearest motorway being the M1) at 10 am, travelling anti-clockwise through Hertfordshire around to Surrey, past the M40, M4, M3 & M23 before stopping at Clackett Lane Services circa 1pm.
Depart Clackett Lane at 1.30pm continue through Surrey to Kent, passing the A22, M20 & M2 and up through the tunnel arriving at Thurrock Services (Essex) at 3pm. Depart Thurrock at 3.30pm back around to South Mimms circa 5pm.
